ऋणायन और धनायन

एक इलेक्ट्रॉन और एक प्रोटोन में बराबर का विद्युत आवेश (चार्ज) होता है। इसलिये किसी आयन का आवेश उसमें मौजूद प्रोटोनों की संख्या को उसमें मौजूद इलेक्ट्रॉनों से घटाकर बताया जाता है। अगर प्रोटोनों की संख्या अधिक हो तो यह आवेश धनात्मक (पोज़िटिव) होता है और अगर इलेक्ट्रॉनों की संख्या अधिक हो तो यह आवेश ऋणात्मक (नेगेटिव) होता है।

ऋणायन (−): इनमें इलेक्ट्रॉन अधिक और प्रोटोन कम होते हैं। अंग्रेज़ी में इन्हें कैटायन (cation) कहते हैं क्योंकि धनात्मक आवेश वाले यह आयोन अगर किसी विद्युत क्षेत्र में डाले जाएँ तो ऋणात्मक (निगेटिव) आवेश वाले कैथोड की ओर आकर्षित होते हैं।

धनायन (+): इनमें प्रोटोन अधिक और इलेक्ट्रॉन कम होते हैं। अंग्रेज़ी में इन्हें ऐनायन (anion) कहते हैं क्योंकि धनात्मक आवेश वाले यह आयन अगर किसी विद्युत क्षेत्र में डाले जाएँ तो धनात्मक (पोज़िटिव) आवेश वाले ऐनोड की ओर आकर्षित होते हैं।
